YouTube Dominates AI Search Citations Across Major LLMs, New Data Shows
Multiple datasets from Meltwater, Tinuiti, OtterlyAI, Weglot, and Scrunch show YouTube has become the most-cited platform across eight major AI systems, with long-form videos between 10 and 20 minutes receiving the highest share of citations — though those citations can fade by roughly 43% within a month.
YouTube has emerged as the most-cited platform across eight leading AI systems, according to data published by Digiday on September 23, 2026, drawing on research from multiple analytics providers. The findings carry implications for brands, creators, and marketers seeking visibility in AI-generated search results.
YouTube Tops Citations Across Eight AI Platforms
Data from Meltwater showed that YouTube was the most-cited platform by eight AI platforms — Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok — in August 2026. The platform has surpassed Reddit, which previously held the lead after Google struck a deal to make Reddit's content available for AI products.
Lauren Lyster, VP and head of social media at Go Fish Digital, attributed YouTube's advantage to how readily its content can be processed by AI systems. "YouTube is obviously where you can work with creators, and that is going to be content that gets transcribed and ranked by services," she said.
YouTube's Share of Citations Surged Inside Google's Own AI Products
According to Tinuiti's Q2 2026 AI Citation Trends report, produced in partnership with AI visibility platform Profound, YouTube's share of citations in Google AI Mode more than quadrupled between January and April 2026, while its share in Google AI Overviews more than doubled over the same period. The analysis tracked citations generated from a consistent set of commercial-intent prompts across AI platforms.
Crystal Duncan, EVP of brand engagement at Tinuiti, noted the breadth of what Google's systems process. "YouTube, especially in relation to Gemini, is a big priority for our clients because its answer engine isn't just crawling the videos but the context of those videos and everything else that goes into producing them," she said.
Digiday noted that a citation does not necessarily mean YouTube content was used to generate an answer; it can also represent the model pointing users to a video as a source for further information.
Long-Form Videos Dominate; Structural Signals Matter
Data from OtterlyAI, cited on the developer community DEV Community, found that 94% of YouTube citations go to long-form videos, compared to just 5.7% accounted for by Shorts. Videos lasting between 10 and 20 minutes account for 32.1% of citations, making that length the most-cited range.
The evidence points to structural content features — such as chapter markers, timestamps, and descriptive, keyword-aligned titles and descriptions — as likely factors that help AI systems identify and reference specific content within longer videos.
Jenny Kelly, Deloitte Digital's head of content, creator and AI, said she is observing brands restructure their video content to align with AI discovery patterns. "They are literally setting the content stage for what the LLMs are looking for and how they prioritize what it is," Kelly said. She described approaches including the use of more natural language, incorporating studies, and adopting FAQ-style formats.
Citations Can Be Short-Lived
Despite YouTube's prominence, the durability of AI citations appears limited. Data from Scrunch, an agent experience platform, found that YouTube citations faded by around 43% within a month, with the citation rate falling from 18.4% to 10.5%. The data came from Scrunch's analysis of thousands of sponsored YouTube videos and millions of citation events across AI platforms between May and July 2026, tracking videos for the month after they were first cited.
The finding indicates that appearing in an AI answer does not guarantee lasting visibility, as AI systems continuously refresh their retrieval and ranking mechanisms, allowing newer videos to displace older ones.
